PINK FLOYD LYRICS

"Keep Talking"

For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals
Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination
We learned to talk

There's a silence surrounding me
I can't seem to think straight
I'll sit in the corner
No one can bother me
I think I should speak now
I can't seem to speak now
My words won't come out right
I feel like I'm drowning
I'm feeling weak now
But I can't show my weakness
I sometimes wonder
Where do we go from here

It doesn't have to be like this
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking

Why won't you talk to me
You never talk to me
What are you thinking
What are you feeling
Why won't you talk to me
You never talk to me
What are you thinking
Where do we go from here

It doesn't have to be like this
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking

Why won't you talk to me
You never talk to me
What are you thinking
What are you feeling
Why won't you talk to me
You never talk to me
What are you thinking
What are you feeling

I feel like I'm drowning
You know I can't breathe now
We're going nowhere
We're going nowhere

Here is an editorial by Steve Jones about Joe Celko as PASS. I can't agree with him more on Joe's arrogance. While I was studying how to store trees (hierarchal data) in a database, of course I came across Joe Celko. He is the master of nested sets. One thing that I noticed which drove my crazy is that Joe copy/pasted the same text on most discussion group responses. He did this everywhere and so many times it had nothing to do with the persons question. So I to, "walked away."

PASS 2

Actually my last day as I'm heading out early Friday morning. I know it's not the best thing to do, but this year the PASS Summit slid up against my 20 year reunion from high school and I'd like to attend. And thanks to everyone that said I didn't look like I'd been out of high school for 20 years.

Today was another great day at the conference, meeting quite a few new people and spending a few minutes with those I'd met earlier this week. Andy had a replication presentation that went very well, with a posse of 10 or so trailing out of the room with him to ask questions after.

While he was busy, I sauntered over to Joe Celko's "Advanced DDL" talk. I'd never met the man or seen him speak, but I've read some of his books and read quite a few postings online, or at least posts that were attributed to him, including a few at SQLServerCentral.com. He's quite a giant in the SQL world and I was interested to see his lecture.

I have to say lecture because he presents like he writes. He kind of talks at you, with not a lot of patience for disagreements or questions. I was ready to leave when he brought up a presentation about identity values. After a relatively short rant on how poor they are in design and the mistakes people make by using them, someone asked a question. Mr. Celko kind of talked in a circle around it, took a short argumentative follow up and then moved along. And I left.

You cannot argue with a zealot. First you'll never change their mind and second you'll lose because they are usually very practiced at their argument. However I don't think the place for an argument is at an learning conference. I think most of us come to be taught, get ideas, and network with others. Arrogance and disrespect have no place and speakers should seek to engage and connect with their audience.

I hope the speaker committee at PASS considers that in the future.
